The name, Mabel means "lovable", and our Mabel is just that! Lovely Mabel came to GGBR as an unclaimed stray at a Bay Area animal shelter. Her microchip indicates that she originally came from Nebraska, and that Mabel was 5-6 years old in 2011.

Mabel is a happy and friendly girl. The color of her coat is a beautiful deep golden brown with black flecks, much like a beautiful piece of oak furniture. Mabel gets along well with other dogs, too. Regarding children, she is recommended for a home with older, respectful children, only.

Mabel does love to chase cats, but she quickly learned that the cats in her foster home do not run from dogs, so after less than a day, she learned to ignore them. She would be fine in a home with dog-savvy cats, but would almost certainly chase a "typical" cat that is afraid of dogs. She shows very little interest in our chickens (which are in a pen, where she can't reach them), and little interest in the wild turkeys, or deer that walk through our yard. She barked at our tortoises, when she first saw them, but she now finds them boring, as well. She does chase flies.

Mabel is housebroken with lovely house manners. Her foster home does not have a doggie door, but Mabel lets us know, when she needs to go outside. She rides in the car, but is not relaxed and remains standing for almost the entire trip, and may also whine. She will be doing a lot of car travel with her foster family, so we will see if more car experience makes her more relaxed.

Mabel has some arthritis in her back, but she can still walk, trot, scamper, run, play and climb stairs. In fact, she LOVES to go for walks (with lots of stopping and sniffing). She is playful with people and other dogs, but, sadly, her current foster brothers are too old to play with her. She occasionally takes out a stuffed toy, or tennis ball, and tosses it around, or engages in a short game of 'tug'. Mabel had a malignant mammary tumor removed in September. There was no sign of its having spread, but she will need to be monitored for possible recurrence.

Is there a place in your home and life for the lovely Mabel? She is just waiting for someone who will be her companion and walking buddy, (but who will maybe not make her do too many long car trips!).
