Marshall Wayne Lee left Chicago on October 1, 2009 and has bicycled his way to San Francisco, basset hound Antigone towed behind him in a kiddie cart. He has camped a little, stayed in motels a little, and been grateful when friends along the way have offered him a bed for a night or two. Many of these friends were made over the internet and it is heartwarming that so many people were touched by the story of this journey and the inspiration it has given to so many people.
Marshall has sought out press and TV coverage along the way and has talked about suicide prevention and how rescuing his basset hound was the turning point in his life. At one time he was planning his own death, trying to finalize the details... how he would do it, who would find him, what to do with his possessions... and then the reality of what would happen to Antigone. How long would she be alone before someone found her. Who would be the person to find Marshall, and how could he do that to someone he cared for? What if Antigone suffered with no food or water? What if she pined for him. He realized that he could NOT be so selfish as to end his life and leave others to suffer as a result. ANTIGONE SAVED HIS LIFE. She rescued Marshall as he had rescued her!
Marshall decided that he needed a fresh start and what began as an impulsive idea, started to gain momentum as he planned his trip.
You can read a lot about Marshall's journey via Antigone's blog....
